The A & H Strike Out Cancer Tournament took place on Sunday, April 15th. There were two shifts, and we had a total of 32 teams competing. The winning team was Frank and Sam(antha) Hunt – a formidable father-daughter duo. Interestingly, the team that came in 2nd was a father-son pair, Rob and Riley Korkosh. Maybe that’s a winning secret!
As part of this tournament, we ran two 50/50 draws – one for each shift – with the proceeds designated to go towards the Wheels of Hope, which is a volunteer-based transportation service to help cancer patients get to and from their medical appointments. The bulk of the funding for the Wheels of Hope actually comes from the Masonic Foundation of Manitoba (providing vehicles, insurance, gas, etc.). All of the drivers are volunteers.
The total donations raised from the tournament was $597 ! The two 50/50 draws initially raised $240, but the person who actually won the 2nd draw – Samantha Hunt – immediately requested that her winnings – $175 – be added to the donation to Wheels of Hope. So, because of that, the total raised by the 50/50’s came out to $415 ! But in addition to that, Rob and Riley Korkosh, who finished in 2nd place, requested that their tournament winnings – $182 – be added directly to the Wheels of Hope donation. This is how the total of $597 was achieved.
Addy Armstrong, who is one of the co-founders of this tournament, and attended the event, was overcome with emotion at these selfless gestures and the overall support from all of the bowlers.
Before each shift of the tournament, Wanda Howard read a prepared statement that she had created, which relates the history of the tournament and its goals. It is a worthwhile read, and we’ve included it below.

For those of you who may not know the history behind this tournament, it was started 17 years ago, by Addy Armstrong and Kelly Carr. Addy’s best friend – Irene Hilderman – who was Kelly’s Mom, and a well-known bowler in Winnipeg, had passed away from cancer several years earlier. When the opportunity arose, Addy and Kelly were able to create this tournament in Irene’s memory, naming it the A(rmstrong) & H(ilderman) Doubles.
The idea behind the tournament was to enable women to bowl together so that perhaps they too could form some very dear and lasting friendships.
Over the years we saw the number of women bowlers dwindle, and a few years ago changed the format to include men, women, and junior bowlers 15+, as friendships can be formed between anyone regardless of their race, sex, or age.
Unfortunately, Addy herself now has cancer so we’ll be coming around selling 50/50 tickets – 10/$5 – with the money going towards the Manitoba CancerCare Volunteer Driver Program (Wheels of Hope), which Addy herself has made use of. We hope you’ll support the cause by purchasing 50/50 tickets.
You’ll have 8 minutes of shadow balls.
You’ll be bowling 3 games, and you’ll be staying on the same pair.
Now in true Addy fashion, turn to the person to your right and give the person next to you, a great big hug. Then turn to your left, and give that person a great big hug.
