Well, this is the 2nd year that the WTBA has tried combining the Allan Boes Memorial and the 5-Divisional Tournaments. The idea of combining these tournaments had to potential benefits: It would allow competitors to bowl in two tournaments at once, allowing their scores to be used for both tournaments, and only having to pay the lineage once. It also allowed us to hold these two tournaments on one weekend, and therefore not tying up two weekends for them.
The first year (2019) we had a phenomenal number of entries – 47 for the Allan Boes, and 42 for the 5-Divisional. We thought we had struck a positive chord with our bowlers and found something that would give them more interest in bowling these tournaments.
This year (2020) was a let-down. The entries were down considerably – 23 for the Allan Boes, and 24 for the 5-Divisional. So maybe we haven’t found the “secret sauce”? The WTBA would love to hear from you, the bowlers. All feedback is welcome. What do you think would help attract more bowlers to the tournaments? What is holding some of you back? Do you have any suggestions? As we said, any and all feedback is welcome!
Now after the above comments, the tournament was still a pretty good event. 24 entries for the 5-Divisional tournament is actually a pretty good number (not counting last year). This is a fun, and interesting tournament, because it gets bowlers to compete on a scratch basis (i.e. no handicaps) against other bowlers in their average class. It’s a taste of that competitive one-on-one match-up. For many, it is a unique experience, because they may have only bowled in handicapped tournaments previously.
